Deepwalk Energy Education
Frequently Asked Questions About DEEP//WALK
Deepwalk is designed to make energy efficiency engaging, measurable, and easy to act on. Whether you manage one building or a full portfolio, this FAQ explains what to expect before, during, and after your event — from team setup to verified savings.
What is a Deepwalk?
A Deepwalk is a guided, hands-on energy treasure hunt that reveals cost savings hidden in everyday operations. It combines field discovery with behavioral engagement to help organizations find and fix inefficiencies in real time. The output is a comprehensive findings report, ready-to-file utility incentive and regulatory compliance documentation, and SOP-ready recommendations that organizations can act on immediately.
Why must occupants participate?
We've found that direct participation will convert insight into momentum. When people participate in uncovering savings, they understand what drives results and (crucially) become part of the success story. That ownership keeps efficiency from fading after the audit and turns reporting into a living narrative.
Deepwalk delivers the technical rigor of a field audit, but its participation model ensures the findings actually stick culturally and operationally.
Why is Deepwalk held after hours?
Evening hours reveal what is truly running. When the building is quiet, it becomes clear which systems and devices continue drawing power unnecessarily. Conducting the event after hours avoids disruption to business operations and provides a clear picture of the baseline that matters most — the one you pay for when no one is there.
How can I expect employees to spend an evening on this?
Three reasons make participation work:

-
People want to do it. When invited, volunteers are eager because the event feels different — hands-on, collaborative, and immediately useful.
-
We help you recruit. We provide a staff-selection guide, sample invitations, and clear role descriptions so participants know exactly what to expect.
-
The contract is flexible. We understand scheduling and recruiting take time. Our agreements include reasonable flexibility and defined minimums to ensure quality.
Most clients fill a Discovery Team within a few days once the format and impact are clear.
Who should be on the Discovery Team?
The best Discovery Teams are built around curiosity, not hierarchy.
A mix of facilities or engineering staff, sustainability or workplace representatives, and one or two engaged occupants or department leads works best. People who are naturally observant and like solving problems often contribute the most.
We provide concise role descriptions and tools so everyone can participate effectively. Our facilitators ensure structure, accuracy, and momentum.
Who does what in a Deepwalk?
Each Deepwalk is led by a certified facilitator and includes 6–8 on-site participants from your staff — typically facility engineers, sustainability leads, and workplace or operations teams. Together, they form a Discovery Team that gathers insights during the walkthrough.
How long does a Deepwalk take?
Most Deepwalks are completed in one evening, with four hours of training, guided walkthrough and team collaboration. The report, including findings and recommendations, are typically delivered within two weeks.
What kinds of savings can we expect?
Typical findings identify 9–13% site-wide electricity savings, along with improved occupant comfort and reduced maintenance load.
What are the core deliverables from Deepwalk?
You receive the Deepwalk Report with a site summary, energy analysis, recommended measures, and ready-to-submit incentive documentation. Most recommendations can be implemented within days using existing staff. The report also includes SOP language, implementation checklists, and recognition elements that reinforce participation and follow through.
How is this different from an energy audit?
Deepwalk emphasizes the human layer of energy performance — connecting people, data, and design. Instead of handing off a static report, it activates your own team through participation, gamified learning, and actionable next steps.
Will my Deepwalk be eligible for utility incentives?
Yes, and we'll help you find and apply for them. Most findings qualify under existing Strategic Energy Management (SEM) or custom incentive programs. The report includes all required documentation and verification evidence for submission.
Can Deepwalk support multiple buildings or campuses?
Yes. Multi-building and campus engagements can be customized for your organization, scaling team participation and analysis across sites.
How does Deepwalk work with SEM and utility incentives?
Deepwalk outputs align with both SEM milestones and custom incentive pathways, and are compatible with documentation formats used by major utilities and program administrators.

Advanced M&V based on IPMVP is available for clients who need ongoing tracking or program-specific modeling.
What if we can't meet a minimum participant count?
We understand that recruiting the right mix of participants could take time. Our contracting model is designed to accommodate this reality: each event agreement includes a defined recruiting period and flexible scheduling window before fieldwork begins. During that time, we provide recruiting tools, sample communications, and selection guidance to help you fill roles quickly and confidently.

If the Discovery team remains undersized after that window, we can either reschedule the event or run a limited-scope version of Deepwalk with adjusted deliverables. However, full participation consistently yields better data, faster validation, and more actionable results.
